In this BLOG post I will teach you how to make ice-cream themed moon sand.

If you’re looking for a fun and festive bin for summer, this is it! Who doesn’t love an ice cream theme?!
Kids will have so much fun as they play!!
They will strengthen fine motor skills, as they dig and scoop and pour.
They will strengthen their language and vocabulary skills as they practice words such as: scoop, mold, soft and squeeze.
They will problem solve. Practice sharing. Use their creativity. They may even sooth and regulate big emotions…all through play!
Maybe they make an ice cream shop or celebrate their teddy bears birthday! Maybe they practice ordering “May I have vanilla ice cream with sprinkles please?” Maybe they just scoops and dig and explore.
There is no wrong way to play!

These activities are so fun for summer but can be enjoyed all year long!

Storage tips:
This Moon Sand will last up to 3 weeks if stored in an air-tight container. If you find it is drying out & becoming too crumbly, add in a few more drops of oil & knead it back in.
If you notice any mold, discard immediately.
IMPORTANT:
There is a difference between taste safe and edible. This recipe is not meant for consumption but it is safe if your child is still exploring with their mouth’s & tries it.
In order for this to be taste safe, you must bake the flour in a sheet pan at 350° for 10-15 minutes. This kills any bacteria that may be found on the flour.

Materials:
(2) cups Flour
Sprinkles (optional)
(1/2 cup) Vegetable oil
Mixing bowl
Measuring cup
Sensory tray or bowl
Step 1: Gather your materials and set up your sensory spot.
Step 2: Pour all of the ingredients into a bowl & mix well.
Step 3: Once the oil is incorporated, I like to go in with my hands and really blend all of the materials together. This also gives you a feel for the moon sand: if it feels sticky, add a bit more flour. If it feels too dry, add a bit more oil! The texture should be soft and squishy. You should be able to easily make a sandcastle but also easily crumble it away.
Step 4: Add in your favorite trinkets and PLAY!
You get to decide what is safe and manageable in your home. Always monitor young children.
