If you’re looking for a simple St. Patrick’s Day sensory activity for toddlers, this one is pure gold.

Meet ShamROCKS — fizzy green “rocks” with a hidden plastic coin inside that your toddler gets to discover by making them bubble and fizz with white vinegar. I LOVE creating fun names for activities, it brings the fun all together!

It’s hands-on. It’s exciting. It supports early learning. And yes… it’s easy to set up.

Plus, I created a FREE printable poem to go along with it (perfect for circle time, morning baskets, or a quick literacy tie-in).

Let’s dive in.

What Are ShamROCKS?

ShamROCKS are homemade baking soda rocks dyed green, molded around plastic coins, and dried until hard. When your toddler squeezes vinegar over them, they fizz and bubble — slowly revealing the “treasure” hidden inside.

This activity is a twist on the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction, but themed for St. Patrick’s Day.

If you’ve ever searched:

  • “St. Patrick’s Day sensory activities for toddlers”

  • “Fizzy science experiment for preschool”

  • “Baking soda and vinegar activity for kids”

This one checks every box.

Why ShamROCKS Are Amazing for Development

As a sensory play specialist, I love activities that feel magical and purposeful. ShamROCKS hit so many developmental areas:

Sensory Processing

  • Watching bubbles form

  • Hearing the fizzing sound

  • Feeling wet vs. dry textures

This kind of multi-sensory input supports brain development and engagement.

Fine Motor Skills

  • Squeezing droppers or squirt bottles

  • Pinching small plastic coins

  • Scooping and pouring vinegar

These tiny movements build the muscles needed for future writing skills.

Early Science Skills

  • Cause and effect

  • Observation

  • Prediction (“What will happen if I add more?”)

Even toddlers are capable scientists when given the right setup.

Early Literacy Connection

The FREE printable ShamROCKS poem turns this into a literacy-rich sensory experience. Read it before, during, or after the activity to build vocabulary and rhythm awareness.

How to Make ShamROCKS (Easy Recipe)

Materials:

  • Baking soda

  • Green food coloring

  • Water

  • Plastic coins

  • White vinegar

  • Dropper or squirt bottle

  • Tray or sensory bin

Directions:

  1. Mix baking soda with a small amount of water until it holds its shape (like damp sand). The amount will depend on the amount and size of the rocks you are making. Start with 2 cups of baking soda and 1/2 cup water. You want it to be firm enough to form a ball, not wet and soupy!

  2. Add green food coloring and mix.

  3. Press mixture around plastic coins to form “rocks.”

  4. Let dry overnight on a tray.

  5. Place rocks in a tray.

  6. Give your toddler vinegar and a pipette and let the fizzing begin!

How to Use the FREE ShamROCKS Poem

Your printable poem can be used in so many ways:

  • Read before the activity to build anticipation

  • Chant it while the rocks fizz

  • Add it to a St. Patrick’s Day activity binder

  • Include it in your morning basket

This adds a literacy layer that transforms a simple science activity into a well-rounded early childhood experience.

Tips for Toddler Success

If you’re doing this with a 2- or 3-year-old:

  • Use a shallow tray to contain mess

  • Model how to squeeze the dropper

  • Use simple language: “It’s fizzing!” “The coin is hiding!”

  • Keep sessions short (10–15 minutes is perfect)

Remember: sensory play doesn’t need to be complicated to be powerful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is baking soda and vinegar safe for toddlers?

Yes — when supervised. Both are common household materials. Always monitor to prevent tasting.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Absolutely. Store dried ShamROCKS in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them.

Do I need food coloring?

No! Skip it and it is just as magical.

The Magic Is in the Play

ShamROCKS aren’t just a cute seasonal activity. They’re:

  • A fine motor workout

  • A science lesson

  • A sensory experience

  • A literacy opportunity

  • And a memory in the making
