If you’re a toddler mom looking for simple, meaningful ways to support your child’s development at home, you’re in the right place.
Fine motor skills play a huge role in early learning—helping toddlers with everything from holding crayons to using scissors to building early writing confidence. That’s why I created Fine Motor Friday, a year‑long series featuring 52 weeks of easy, hands‑on fine motor activities you can do right at home.
Each Friday, I share one small, manageable activity designed to strengthen your child’s hand muscles, coordination, and early pre‑writing skills.
No complicated setups. No fancy materials. Just real, developmentally appropriate play that fits into everyday life with little ones.
Below is a look at our first three weeks—perfect examples of how simple materials can support big developmental growth.
Why Fine Motor Skills Matter for Toddlers
Fine motor skills are the small movements of the hands, fingers, and wrists. These skills help toddlers:
Build hand strength
Develop coordination
Improve pencil grasp
Strengthen pre‑writing and early math skills
Gain independence in daily tasks (zipping, buttoning, feeding themselves)
Strong fine motor skills make early literacy and early math more accessible. When toddlers can control their hands, they can better explore letters, numbers, shapes, and tools. When their motor skills are strong, their confidence in daily tasks will increase, as will their independence!
That’s the heart of Fine Motor Friday—playful, sensory‑rich activities that build the foundation for future learning.
Fine Motor Friday: Weeks 1–3

Week 1: Sticker Play for Pincer Grasp
Our first activity focused on one of the most important early fine motor skills: the pincer grasp. Stickers are a toddler favorite, and peeling them off the sheet requires precision, finger strength, and hand‑eye coordination.
Why it matters: Sticker play strengthens the tiny muscles needed for holding crayons, turning pages, and beginning letter formation. It’s also a great way to build focus and independence.
How to do it: Offer your toddler a sheet of stickers and a piece of paper. Invite them to peel, place, and create freely. That’s it—simple, engaging, and developmentally powerful.

Week 2: Q‑Tips in a Jar for Hand‑Eye Coordination
For Week 2, we used an empty cheese jar (or any small container) and a handful of Q‑tips.
Toddlers love dropping objects into containers, and this activity is a perfect way to build hand‑eye coordination and finger control.
Why it matters: This motion mimics the same skills needed for writing, drawing, and using tools. It also supports early math concepts like counting, one‑to‑one correspondence, and spatial awareness.
How to do it: Clean out a small jar, remove the label, and offer your toddler Q‑tips to drop inside. You can count together, sort by color, or simply enjoy the repetition.

Week 3: Sponge Squeezing for Full Hand Strength
Week 3 introduces a whole‑hand activity using sponges and water. Squeezing a sponge is a powerful way to build gross grasp strength, which toddlers need for tasks like opening snack bags, using scissors, and stabilizing their hands for writing.
Why it matters: Full‑hand strength supports both fine motor development and everyday independence. It also provides calming sensory input—perfect for toddlers who love water play.
How to do it: Fill a shallow tray with water, add a few sponges, and invite your toddler to soak, squeeze, transfer, and explore. It’s messy in the best way—engaging, sensory‑rich, and developmentally meaningful.
