In this BLOG post I will teach you how to make taste-safe chickpea foam for sensory play.

If you are looking for a simple, taste-safe sensory play option, this is it! It is so soft, so fluffy and comes together in minutes!!! The best part- it only requires TWO ingredients- 3 if you use food coloring!

This sensory bin is perfect for anyone, but especially useful for those who are still exploring with their mouths. It provides a safe, non-toxic option in case a finger or two sneaks in for a taste.

Aquafaba combines the magic of sensory play with the mystery of science, and it is SO fun each and every time! You can use food coloring, or keep it as is. You can make it an ocean theme, or a princess theme or a truck and digger theme. You can make it one color, or rainbow colors.

The possibilities for learning and play are endless!

Read the benefits of messy play HERE!

It is light and smooth and an amazing texture to explore.

Here are a few fun ways that you can explore it:

  • Add in your favorite scoops, bowls and cups and mix and pour away.

  • Add in gems or rocks and go hunting for them under the foam.

  • Add in plastic or wooden letters or numbers and add an academic twist to your play.

  • Add in a small digger or car and push and scoop the foam into piles.

  • Add in sea animals and enjoy a festive ocean theme.

Frequently asked questions:

How long does it last?

This is a one-time use sensory bin. It is best to play with it immediately after blending.

How do you dispose of it?

Wash it right down the drain when you are done.

Does it smell?

It has a bit of a chickpea smell, but it is not overpowering.

Does it stain hands if you use food coloring?

There may be some color transfer if you use food coloring. It washes off with soap and water.

Can you make multiple colors?

Yes! Just follow the directions for each batch you would like to make.

Materials:

  • Two cans of chickpeas

  • Can opener

  • Strainer

  • Cream of tartar

  • Food coloring (optional)

  • Hand mixer

  • Mixing bowl

  • Measuring spoon

  • Sensory tray or bowl

  • Your favorite scoops, bowls and trinkets

Step 1: Open the two cans of chickpeas and strain the liquid. This is the part you need for the sensory bin! Store the chickpeas in the refrigerator for later.

Step 2: Add in 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar.

Step 3: If you are using food coloring, add in 3-4 drops now.

Step 4: Use the hand mixer to slowly blend the materials together. You want to continue until it has a similar consistency to shaving cream. This will take approximately 4-5 minutes.

Step 5: Pour the foam into a sensory tray or bowl, add in your favorite scoops and bowls and PLAY!
