If you’re looking for a winter craft that requires almost zero prep, uses supplies you probably already have, and looks beautiful hanging in a window or on the tree… this DIY popsicle stick snowflake craft is a must-try.

It’s simple, glittery, kid-friendly, and perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and big kids who love making something they can proudly display.

Here’s the full guide, including tips to keep it low-mess and actually enjoyable.

Why We Love This Craft:

This snowflake project checks all the boxes:

  • Low cost (popsicle sticks + glue = done!)

  • Quick setup

  • Great for mixed ages

  • Strengthens fine motor skills

  • Looks magical when decorated with glitter, sequins, or paint

Plus, the geometric snowflake patterns let kids be creative without needing perfection.

Materials:

  • Popsicle sticks (3–6 per snowflake depending on design)

  • School glue or a hot glue gun (adult use only)

  • Glitter, sequins, Pom Poms, tape and/ or gems

  • String or ribbon for hanging

  • Paper plate or tray for catching glitter

Step 1: Arrange the Snowflake Shape

Start by laying out your popsicle sticks in different snowflake formations:

  • 3 sticks → simple star

  • 4 sticks → classic snowflake

  • 6 sticks → more intricate design

Kids can experiment with shapes before gluing.

Step 2: Glue the Sticks Together

Use school glue for toddlers (more drying time but safer) or a hot glue gun for fast assembly.

Make sure the center has a good amount of glue so the snowflake stays sturdy.

Step 3: Add Paint (Optional)

If you want a more colorful snowflake, paint the sticks before decorating.

White, silver, or icy blue look especially pretty.

Step 4: Time to Decorate!

This is the fun part. Let kids add:

  • Glitter

  • Sequins

  • Pom-poms

  • Gems

  • Metallic markers

Encourage them to sprinkle glitter over a tray for easier cleanup.

Step 5: Add a Hanging Loop

Tie a small piece of ribbon or string around one stick or glue it to the back.

Now your snowflake is ready for the tree, windows, doorknobs, or gift wrapping!

This simple winter project helps strengthen:

  • Fine motor skills

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Sensory exploration

  • Spatial awareness

  • Creativity and confidence

BONUS: because every snowflake is unique, kids naturally learn that their art doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be beautiful.

Tips for Success (and Less Mess!)

  • Use glitter shakers instead of open jars for younger kids.

  • Prep a glitter tray (cookie sheet or box lid) so you can shake excess glitter into a container and reuse it.

  • Make the snowflakes in batches and hang them from a branch or mobile for a winter wonderland display.

Perfect For…

  • Classroom winter crafts

  • Holiday parties

  • Snow-themed sensory weeks

  • Gift toppers

  • Or a cozy, quiet afternoon activity at home

For even more variation, use different size craft sticks!
